TransLogic Auto Carriers joins U.S. EPA SmartWay Transport Partnership
TransLogic Auto Carriers, a leading national local and long-haul auto transportation services company, recently announced that it has joined the SmartWay Transport Partnership, an innovative collaboration between the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the freight industry, designed to increase energy efficiency while significantly reducing greenhouse gases and air pollution.
TransLogic will contribute to the Partnership's goal to reduce the release of 33 to 66 million metric tons of carbon dioxide and up to 200,000 tons of nitrogen oxide per year by 2012 by improving the environmental performance of its freight operations. Carbon dioxide is the most common greenhouse gas, and nitrogen oxide is an air pollutant that contributes to smog. By joining the SmartWay Transport Partnership, TransLogic demonstrates its strong environmental leadership and corporate responsibility.
"We are keenly aware of the negative effects that excess pollutants have on the environment," said Ricky N. Coley, executive chairman of TransLogic Auto Carriers, "and TransLogic has always been on the cutting edge of fuel-saving strategies. Our partnership with SmartWay will go a long way in placing us in the company of other EPA high-performers."
As part of the SmartWay Partnership, TransLogic will be looking at technologies and practices that might be taken to make ground freight more efficient and cleaner for the environment. These could include a reduction of truck idling time, automatic tire inflation systems, single wide-base tires, improved tractor aerodynamics, low-viscosity lubricants, improved freight logistics, hybrid powertrain technology and several other environmentally friendly solutions.
Launched in February 2004, the SmartWay Transport Partnership aims to achieve fuel savings of up to 150 million barrels of fuel per year. The Partnership brings together major freight shippers, trucking companies, railroads, logistics companies and trade/professional associations to pursue mutually beneficial efficiencies that result in emissions reductions and other environmental improvements, as well as cost savings to the companies. The Partnership currently has approximately 1,400 partners.
