Shipping News: Sydney Harbour Bridge Sailing History Repeated

Last weekend a Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics' 1984-built 66,532 GT RoRo vessel MV Texas lead a flotilla of boats under the Sydney Harbour Bridge. It was 75 years ago to the day that a Wilh. Wilhelmsen cargo ship became one of the first vessels to pass under this historic Sydney landmark at its official opening in 1932.

In 1932, Wilh. Wilhelmsen's 1927-built 6465 GT MV Temeraire sailed under the Bridge carrying wool and metals out of Australia for Europe.

Today, the cargoes carried and the types of vessels that Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics operate are vastly different.

The MV Texas is almost twice the length of MV Temeraire, has six times as many cargo decks and carries four times the volume of cargo as the her 57-year ancestor. MV Texas carries cars, mining and agricultural machinery from Europe, North America and South Africa to Australia and sails as part of Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics' global fleet of around 65 vessels serving trade routes to five continents.

Wilh. Wilhelmsen ships have been part of Australia's trading with the world since 1895. Today, the MV Texas and other Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics vessels call at Australian ports regularly, moving some 475,459 tonnes of cargo each year, including 148,619 cars.

Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics, which is jointly owned by Wilh. Wilhelmsen of Norway and Wallenius Lines of Sweden handles 3.3 million movements of cars and rolling equipment globally - 1.7 million by sea and 1.6 million by land. In addition the company provides technical services for 1.65 million cars and 47,000 rolling equipment units.
