JMAR Technologies Joins Homeland Security Effort To Create Advanced Cargo-Inspection Software
SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--JMAR Technologies, Inc. (OTCBB:JMAR), a leading innovator in the development and commercialization of sensing systems for the detection of chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosive (CBRNE) materials, today announced that its subsidiary, Spectral Labs Inc., is participating in a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) program to develop advanced image-processing software for cargo inspection systems.
Spectral Labs has been awarded a subcontract by Creative Electron Inc. of Carlsbad, Calif., to support efforts under a DHS contract for development of a new non-intrusive inspection (NII) image processing tool called Standalone Multiple Anomaly Recognition Technique (SMART) being developed by Creative Electron Inc.
Today, customs and military agencies worldwide use more than 1,000 large-scale inspection systems that rely on x-ray and gamma ray technology to image the contents of cargo containers and vehicles. Each complex image must be analyzed by an operator to check for threats such as drugs, weapons, explosives, money or other contraband, a time-consuming and error-prone task. DHS is seeking improved methods to accelerate the flow of cargo and reduce the possibility of contraband going undetected. SMART will use state-of-the-art spectral decomposition analysis techniques to efficiently differentiate the common background of the image against anomalies.
"With this effort, Creative Electron and JMAR hope to develop a software tool that can be licensed to the users of cargo inspection equipment to greatly enhance their effectiveness," said Creative Electron President Bill Cardoso, Ph.D.
JMAR Technologies CEO Neil Beer, Ph.D., added, "The choice of Spectral Labs to support this development effort is a tribute to their exceptional talent and well-established track record as specialists in CBRNE detection technologies."
