Florida Department Of Transportation Deploys Glimmerglass To Switch Intelligent Transportation System Network

HAYWARD, Calif.-- (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Glimmerglass announced today that the Florida Department of Transportation District 5 deployed its Intelligent Optical Switch to further enhance the resiliency and flexibility of Florida's Intelligent Transportation System (ITS). The ITS program endeavors to provide a safe transportation system that ensures the mobility of people and goods, enhances economic prosperity, and preserves the quality of its environment and communities.

The Glimmerglass switch will be used to help feed information from roadway sensors to the dynamic message signs and a 511 system which will inform travelers of travel times, congestion, and incidents. The switch significantly improves the redundancy and flexibility of the Intelligent Transportation System network, providing the most up-to-date information to motorists.

The Florida Department of Transportation District 5 Intelligent Transportation System is part of the Regional Transportation Management Center in Orlando, Florida which monitors Interstate 4 and Interstate 95 in Central Florida. The system consists of dynamic message signs, vehicle detection systems, roadway cameras, and the 511 travel information service.

"Many departments of transportation are implementing traffic management and congestion control systems to reduce accidents and improve commute times," said Robert Lundy, Glimmerglass CEO. "Optical switches are ideally suited to manage extremely dynamic information flow in addition to quickly identifying faults and restoring critical services. They are an ideal fit for use in this industry. We're pleased that the Florida Department of Transportation has chosen Glimmerglass and that our switches are considered a key element of their Regional Transportation Management network."
