Dollar General Driving Value Across Fast Growing National Network With Manugistics' Global Logistics Management Solutions
Manugistics Group, Inc. (Nasdaq: MANU), a leading global provider of demand and supply chain management solutions, today announced that Dollar General Corporation (NYSE: DG) has reported positive results from a strategic supply chain initiative. Dollar General, which operates more than 6,500 stores in its 27 state market area, began working with Manugistics in 1999 as the company embarked on a supply chain improvement initiative to stay competitive while managing annually a more than 10 percent increase in store growth. Currently, Dollar General is using Manugistics' Global Logistics Management Solutions to improve transportation planning and processes, and achieve optimal efficiency across the company's complex national logistics operations.
Dollar General stores sell consumable basic goods, including paper products, cleaning supplies, health and beauty aids, foods and snacks, housewares, toys, basic apparel and seasonal items. These items are frequently used and replenished by consumers, requiring the company to optimize thousands of inbound, outbound and backhaul shipments each week to keep the popular stores well-stocked. Dollar General's logistics operations must also regularly scale to accommodate the company's high growth rate. The company opened 78 new stores in September alone. A Fortune 500 discount retailer, Dollar General operated 6,580 stores in 27 states as of October 3, 2003.
"We worked with Manugistics to do a thorough assessment of our transportation business processes, helping us identify opportunities for improvement," said Tony Davis, vice president, transportation, Dollar General. "The Manugistics team brought industry expertise that has helped us identify key areas for improvements. Additionally, we have reduced the time required to create optimized logistics plans, which allows us to be responsive to the demand for our Dollar General stores."
"We are proud to offer innovative organizations like Dollar General strategies to drive efficiencies in their supply chains through our Global Logistics Management Solutions," said Chris Verheuvel, vice president, solutions consulting for retail, Manugistics. "With clients that range across so many leading global industries utilizing our innovative solutions, we are confident that Manugistics offers superior functionality and industry expertise to help our clients achieve ROI while positioning for success in a fast moving, highly competitive consumer marketplace."
