Ann Arbor, MI --(Marketwire) - Con-way Freight, a less-than-truckload (LTL) freight carrier and subsidiary of Con-way Inc. (NYSE: CNW), announced today that -- for the first time -- readers of Logistics Management have ranked it the No. 1 National LTL Carrier in the publication's Quest for Quality Awards. Voters gave the company top scores in the on-time performance, value and customer service categories. Since its first Quest for Quality Awards mention in 1988, the company has been recognized as among the nation's best regional LTL carriers 18 times.

Honorees were recognized at an awards dinner following the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP) Annual Conference in Chicago Sept. 23. A full list of winners is available at http://www.logisticsmgmt.com/article/CA6675519.html.

"Even during challenging economic times, Con-way Freight employees have shown an unwavering commitment to customers and maintaining our standards of exception-free, on-time and faster service to best meet their needs," said John G. Labrie, president, Con-way Freight. "This award is a reflection of their tremendous efforts and our single, nationwide network. It's particularly gratifying to be honored for the first time as the No. 1 National LTL Carrier since it's based on feedback from customers."

More than 6,480 logistics and supply chain decision makers voted for the 2009 Quest for Quality Award winners -- 400 more than in 2008. Voters ranked companies on a variety of attributes, with scores weighted according to their importance to readers surveyed. This year, readers deemed on-time performance most important, followed by value and customer service. Con-way Freight ranked first among national LTL carriers on all three attributes, defined as:

  • Performance: On-time pickup and delivery, consistently dependable schedules and transit times
  • Value: Rates are competitive with other carriers offering the same service, pricing commensurate with service level required by customer, simplified pricing
  • Customer service: Prompt claims settlement, able to trace and expedite shipments, problems solved promptly and courteously

The Quest for Quality No. 1 ranking represents the most recent of a series of honors for the Ann Arbor, Mich.-based LTL carrier. Earlier this year, it was recognized as 2008 Carrier of the Year by both Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. and Whirlpool Corporation. This year also marked the successful launch of the company's TrueLTL(SM) Pricing model, offering unprecedented simplicity in pricing for large LTL shipments. For 26 years, Logistics Management's Quest for Quality Awards have been regarded in the transportation and logistics industry as the most important measure of customer satisfaction and performance excellence. In the annual survey, readers rate carriers and third-party logistics (3PL) companies strictly on the basis of service quality.
