Clinical Trial Logistics Materials: Wyeth And DHL Align Shipping And Logistics Operations

DHL Relationship Improves Efficiencies in Managing Global Clinical Trials

DHL, the world leading express delivery and logistics company, and Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, a division of Wyeth (NYSE: WYE), announced a multi-year strategic agreement for the logistics coordination of Wyeth's global clinical trial materials distribution. This new agreement marks the first time a single lead logistics provider has been awarded the responsibility for oversight of clinical trial logistics material shipments and processes throughout multiple distribution channels worldwide.

"DHL was chosen to improve Wyeth's clinical trial materials distribution, and increase efficiencies by uniting the flow of information and physical goods through automation, visibility and improved collaboration," said Robert Krautheim, President of Life Science and Healthcare at DHL.

Wyeth is one of the world's largest research-driven pharmaceutical and health care products companies, and leader in the discovery, development, manufacturing, and marketing of pharmaceuticals, vaccines, biotechnology products and non-prescription medicines that improve the quality of life for people worldwide.

Together, Wyeth and DHL will create a closed-loop clinical trial materials supply chain to streamline track and trace capabilities, financial and performance indicators and operational process flows. The initial scope of the agreement includes global distribution by DHL of clinical materials and a framework for warehousing solutions.

"We believe this unique collaboration has the potential to reduce the logistical complexity of our clinical trial operations by providing a leading global infrastructure, and expertise in logistics solutions within the life science industry, " says Ira Spector, Vice President, Vice Chief of Operations Clinical Development - Operations, Wyeth Research. "Our goal is for DHL to significantly streamline our clinical trials logistics operations, improve Wyeth's clinical trial logistical analysis and rationalization of related warehouse optimization, and encompass services provided to our research organization, as well as Wyeth's third party service providers."

DHL will provide Wyeth with improved visibility and control of its clinical shipments by leveraging DHL's global distribution network, local relationships, customs brokerage expertise, and information technology (IT) solutions.

"DHL is uniquely suited to manage the entire supply chain and distribution needs for the Life Sciences Industry, improving the handling quality, data integrity, and overall supply chain processes that facilitate the development of life-saving and enhancing medicines," said Angelos Orfanos, Vice President of Americas Sales, Life Sciences & Healthcare, for DHL Global Customer Solutions. "Wyeth is the kind of global customer that our full-scale technology platform was developed for, enabling each step of medical material transfer to be visible and monitored from product development to trial to consumption."
