Brand Manufacturers Rely On DHL's Logistics Concept

Colgate-Palmolive, Johnson & Johnson and Reckitt Benckiser are placing their trust in the new logistics concept of DHL Exel Supply Chain. This autumn, Deutsche Post World Net's contract logistics expert will open a Logistics Campus in Unna in the county of North Rhine-Westphalia, designed especially for brand manufacturers of cosmetics and cleaning agents. Initially covering 645,000 sq. feet, the first customers to tap the quality and flexibility benefits available in Unna will be Colgate-Palmolive and Johnson & Johnson. Reckitt Benckiser will move in in the mid of 2008 when 215,000 sq. feet will have been added to the campus.

André van den Broek, in charge of consumer goods business at DHL Exel Supply Chain in Germany says: "The Logistics Campus is the concept of a new generation. Its key benefits include its sector-specific orientation and high level of standardization. Compared to traditional logistics centers, we can offer our customers markedly better quality and flexibility."

DHL has designed the center in Unna to meet the requirements of manufacturers of cosmetic products and cleaning agents. Frequently changing assortments and seasonal capacity logjams are key features of this sector. Manufacturers need sufficient leeway to respond to these challenges and realize synergies – the only way to ensure a high service level in the market. The campus concept guarantees uniform standards in warehousing and transport processes as well as in the area of IT systems. In addition, identical hall designs ensure that all DHL services can be flexibly adapted to the customer's warehouse capacity requirements at any time.

Cornelia Creischer, managing director of commercial logistics at Colgate-Palmolive, notes: "The campus concept convinced us to choose DHL as our new logistics partner in Germany and Austria. Future-oriented logistics means supporting manufacturers in offering their customers added value and reliable supplies. The future starts in Unna." The company previously managed its logistics operations for the German and Austrian market from Hamburg.

Aside from comprehensive warehousing services and value-added assistance such as display construction and RFIT integration, DHL also handles the processing of national and European shipments. An SAP platform developed specifically for the consumer goods industry ensures that all partners can use a common information interface.

Uwe Beckmann, supply chain director at Johnson & Johnson, explains: "We continue our long-standing partnership with DHL in Unna. Together, we have built successful distribution logistics operations for the German market and the Benelux countries, including various value-added services. We will now optimize these further with the help of the campus concept."

Frank Stier, Supply Chain Director Central Europe at Reckitt Benckiser, adds: "The DHL Logistic Campus in Unna is a solution that supports our goals perfectly. We want to grow further on and need a flexible logistics environment which will endorse these developments with focus on quality."

All logistics services offered in Dortmund will be relocated to Unna by the end of the year. All employees will receive jobs at the new location.
