Accu-Sort® Bar Code Reading Camera Systems Chosen For Major Parcel Sorting Center Expansion

Accu-Sort® Systems announced that a major U.S.-based parcel delivery company has chosen Accu-Sort advanced auto ID technology for a sorting hub expansion that will greatly increase overall sortation capacity. Almost 500 Accu-Vision® AV6010 Long-range Cameras will be employed in both high-speed bar code reading and DWS (Dimension, Weigh, Scan) operations planned for this facility.

"While the AV6010 system incorporates exceptional optical image quality and sophisticated software that makes it ideal for high-speed 1D and 2D bar code reading and OCR applications," said Adnan Ahmed, Accu-Sort Vice President of Marketing, "what this parcel delivery company really likes is the overall architecture of the system that increases reliability and serviceability and lowers the total cost of owning and operation."

Lower Total Cost of Ownership
By embedding a Linux operating system in each AV6010 camera, Accu-Sort eliminated the need for a separate PC at each tunnel, along with external software and hard-drive glitches. And by linking tunnel system components via an internal Ethernet network, Accu-Sort removed a layer of networking for the user to manage and support - an important benefit in this complex, highly networked facility.

A significant contributor to the low total cost of ownership is a reduction in the number of cameras required. A unique Accu-Sort scanning tunnel configuration requires only four cameras to scan five sides of each parcel. Using the same cameras for both the high-speed bar code scanning tunnels and DWS stations further reduces the number of cameras needed. A standard AV6010 camera can be quickly adapted to DWS operation simply by swapping out a control module.

Simplicity and Serviceability
The parcel company is a self-sustaining operation, relying on trained internal technicians to maintain sorting equipment. The simplicity and serviceability of the modular AV6010 design, along with its unprecedented 75,000-hour MTBF (Mean Time Before Failure) make it the ideal system for this facility, Ahmed said. Unlike other camera systems, the optical package, power supply, control module and LED illumination module are each field replaceable units. It is a robust "plug-and-play" design that allows components to be changed out in less than 10 minutes, using only a Phillips screwdriver.

"The AV6010 camera system sets a new standard for fully integrated, camera-based scanning solutions and will serve as the new technology platform for future Accu-Sort products "said Adnan Ahmed. "Our collective experience of more than 8500 installations world wide has been incorporated into this new product," he added.
