Hypercom Introduces New M4200 Mobile Series Of PCI-Approved Payment Terminals
Hypercom Corporation recently announced the new Optimum M4200 series of mobile electronic payment terminals, a family of four battery-powered devices designed to meet the need for high-performance, portable payment solutions. The line offers the same rapid 32-bit multi-application processing, compact form factor and market-leading memory size as Hypercom's recently released Optimum T4200 countertop platform. The series also features the latest security standards approvals, including PCI PED, EMV Level 1 & 2 and MasterCard's PTSP. The M4200 family shares the same application development toolkit and user interface as the T4200, enabling business applications written for one platform to be quickly repurposed for the other for fast deployment. This unrivaled efficiency constitutes the most flexible platform in point-of-sale today.
The M4200 mobile series will be available with or without an integrated smart card reader for global deployments, with a choice of long-range GPRS with dial backup or Bluetooth wireless with dial or Ethernet connectivity. The rechargeable battery supports more than 200 transactions per charge even while printing receipts.
The M4230 GPRS versions are perfect for field services such as on-site HVAC service, appliance installation and repairs, door-to-door sales, flea markets, warehouses, and transportation services. They are also ideal for line-busting to alleviate wait times during peak seasons for larger retail stores. The Bluetooth models are equipped with EZURiO's latest powered Bluetooth technology that provides more than double the range and reception of competitive legacy Bluetooth POS devices. These models are ideal for installations that require roaming such as pay-at-the-table and petroleum full service. Offering dial or Ethernet communication options, the Bluetooth access point provides better flexibility than the traditional docking station/access point combinations. Bluetooth is a great alternative to WiFi solutions as it is easier to install and does not require access to a customer's sensitive network.
"The M4200 is a true breakthrough product that makes secure mobile transactions the new standard in POS," said Gregory Boardman, Vice President, Global Product Marketing, Hypercom Corporation. "Our Optimum platforms equip customers with a complete POS solution that can be deployed in any end-use scenario, regardless of communications needs. They also have all the necessary regulatory and regional approvals required for any geography, as well as the ability to save time by writing applications that will work across the entire product family."
Mike Friedman of Mercatus, LLC, a consulting and investing firm focused on retail financial services and the payment industry, said: "Mobile POS represents a significant opportunity characterized by impressive growth rates against an under-penetrated market."
Each unit in the M4200 series features a clear 160 x 80 pixel monochrome display, easy-to-use 19-key keypad, fast integrated printer and standard 24MB memory that is two to three times larger than similar products to accommodate value-added applications such as gift/loyalty programs and dynamic currency conversion. The platform also supports both magnetic stripe and chip cards, secure, PCI PED-approved debit transactions.
Other features include:
- Compact form factor - The M4200 housing is just 3.6" wide, 8" long and 2.3" high for easy portability.
- High performance - All four models are built around a 32-bit ARM 9 processor and include Hypercom's adaptive application architecture for unrivaled multi-application processing. All models also have options for a fast modem for dial downloads or dial backup to wireless. The Bluetooth model boasts exceptional range as it uses a new powered Bluetooth technology from EZURiO and a separate access point for optimal placement resulting in more than double the range of other Bluetooth POS models.
- High security - The M4200 platform is PCI PED-approved (Payment Card Industry - PIN Entry Device) ensuring safe PIN entry for cardholders, an optional privacy shield, and DES and Triple DES DUKPT encryption support to protect cardholder PINs. The models are also MasterCard PTSP-approved for safe transaction processing over wireless. The M4200 series employs the very successful HyperSafe 32 security architecture to prevent the introduction of fraudulent applications or competitor "slamming," effectively reducing terminal attrition without requiring a proprietary device that is limited to specific hosts.
- Global capabilities - The M4200 has options for integrated chip card readers that are approved for both EMV Level 1 and 2 global payment standards. All models are also approved for the RoHS (Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances) requirements of the European Union.
- Simplified Bluetooth implementation - Bluetooth-based Optimum M4240 terminals come with separate charging bases and stand-alone access points, eliminating deployment and wireless coverage limitations associated with competitive products that force one device to serve both purposes. M4240 access points can be placed in any location for maximum signal performance, while the charging dock can be placed where they are more accessible to the user. A single M4240 access point can also serve multiple terminals simultaneously. Combined with the new EZURiO powered Bluetooth technology, this model is the most powerful Bluetooth solution available.
- Easy use, installation and administration for low TCO - Features include an easy-to-use 19-key keypad, a fast roll thermal printer, Hypercom's exclusive wizard-style user interface for faster and more accurate terminal configuration, and the company's integrated diagnostic application with an embedded help system to aid effective installation and troubleshooting of connectivity while reducing the number of help desk calls and reducing terminal replacements. The support tools and customer-designed interface deliver one of the lowest total costs of ownership for terminals in this class.
The new Optimum M4200 mobile terminals are available now for volume shipments. These milestone products join an already successful and powerful complete Optimum family of PCI PED-approved terminals for single and multi-lane retailers.
