Unitive Electronics Installs Camstar MES Into Expanded Semiconductor Processing Operations

February 21, 2000

<%=company1%> today announced that its MESA manufacturing execution suite (MES) has been deployed by Unitive Electronics, Inc. (Durham, NC) as part of a manufacturing expansion and upgrade program that will increase plant production to an eventual capacity of more than 100,000 wafers per year. Unitive offers high-quality Flip Chip bumping services to the electronics industry and has developed a highly reliable and cost-effective industrial manufacturing process for its production. MESA will be used at Unitive as a shop floor and process control system to track the flow of product as it moves through the electroplated solder bumping process.

Unitive Electronics was formed in 1996 in response to customer demand for Flip Chip bumping services. The expansion of the Unitive fab at Durham reflects increasing market demand for the new technology as chip manufacturers move from current wire bonding methodologies to the new technique, and is being accomplished by enhancement to Unitive's existing base of state-of-the-art processing equipment and software. The Durham facility includes a 10,000 square-foot Class 10 clean room and provides standard 100 through 200 micron bump diameter wafer bumping services for all current wafer diameters.

MESA will replace the custom MES that had previously been used at Unitive. "We looked at a lot of the commercial MES software that was out there for our upgrade," says Jack Baker, Unitive's Manager of Materials, "and Camstar had the out-of-the-box, turnkey package that satisfied all our requirements while fitting comfortably into our budget. We had compiled detailed 'must have' and 'nice to have' lists, and were very pleased to see that Camstar's MESA included even the 'nice-to-have' functionality within the basic package."

Ongoing plans call for interfacing MESA with Unitive's MAS90 material control system (Sage Software, Greensboro, NC), and deploying resource management, statistical process control, and scheduling MESA modules. "The electronics packaging industry is undergoing a major infrastructure change," says Dr. Paul Magill, Unitive's Chief Technology Officer, "and as more manufacturers adopt our advanced packaging technology we need to have production capability that can keep up with the demand. Camstar's manufacturing software gives us a very solid base on which to build our continued growth."

Founded in 1984, Camstar Systems, Inc. supplies its manufacturing execution system (MES) software to the semiconductor, electronics, textiles, paper, metals, and food markets, as well as to other industries for which tracking, traceability, quality data collection, and process control are mission-critical to corporate success. The company offers and supports two distinct MES products - MESA for the IBM AS/400 series and InSite for Microsoft's Windows NT platform. Camstar Systems, Inc. is located at 900 E. Hamilton Ave., Suite 400, Campbell, CA 95008, 408/559-5700, Fax: 408/558-9350, http://www.camstar.com.
