npower needed to upgrade its existing collection of handheld devices because they were no longer being produced or supported by the manufacturer. Since handheld devices are mission-critical to field service operations, npower realised it had to act quickly to find a replacement. "It became evident that an upgrade would be necessary to keep mission-critical field service operations such as utility meter reading services running," explains Peter Hellewell, meter installations manager for npower Energy Services.
The energy supplier determined that the devices it selected had to be rugged, in particular water resistant, in order to cope with the sometimes harsh and volatile working conditions of field service. The devices needed GPRS for simple data communication, and npower also considered future-proofing technologies such as 3G and GPS.
