Artist And Dot-Com Executives Join Forces In The Fight Against Cancer

July 28, 2000

Leading B2B Internet Companies Sponsor National Breast Cancer Benefit with More Than 50 Artists Contributing Work for Silent Auction

ATLANTA, July 5, 2000 - Several dot-coms are taking their arsenal of fundraising know-how from their experiences with venture capitalists and applying it to help win a nation-wide fight against breast cancer. BrightLane.com, Celarix Inc., hsupply.com, and IPNet Solutions Inc., today announced they are sponsoring "Dot-Coms for a Cause," a national benefit to raise money for breast cancer prevention, at the King Plow Arts Center on July 13 in Atlanta. The event, being catered and partially sponsored by the Bold American Food Company, boasts an exclusive silent auction. More than 50 artists have contributed pieces of artwork that retail for between $200 and $5000 to raise funds for the cause.

Benn Konsynski, the George S. Craft professor at Emory University's Goizueta School and head of Emory's Center for Digital Commerce, comments, "We've all heard about the significant contributions made by Internet gurus, like Pierre Omidyar (founder of eBay), to philanthropic causes once they've made their billions - but this group of B2B dot-coms is breaking new ground. Instead of throwing lavish coming-out parties, they've joined forces to put an investment back into the community, making a significant difference for a very worthy cause."

All proceeds from this year's event will benefit the Avon Products Foundation, a non-profit organization promoting the prevention and early detection of breast cancer. Organizers plan to make the benefit an annual event. For the inaugural year, the dot-coms selected the charity because of the dramatic effect prevention can have. The American Cancer Society predicts there will be more than 182,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer diagnosed and more than 40,000 deaths from the disease in 2000. Death rates from breast cancer declined significantly from 1992 to 1996, likely the result of better detection and improved treatments.

"Breast cancer is a devastating disease that affects women and their families in every socio-economic group of every community in the United States," said Nicole Preston, managing director of the Avon Breast Cancer 3-Day in Atlanta. In the last year, the Avon Products Foundation has raised more than $20 million and has funded over 500 community-based programs nationwide that support breast cancer education and early detection.

"This benefit will be a great jump-start in building momentum for our 3-Day events, scheduled to take place in multiple cities across the country this summer," added Preston. "We're excited that the technology community is getting involved and that these companies, based in cities across the U.S., have chosen to lead the way for future corporate involvement."

Preston will speak at the benefit to raise awareness for Avon Breast Cancer 3-Day in Atlanta, and to promote Avon's efforts to work with organizations nationwide to help educate community members on prevention and early detection of the disease.

The artwork for the auction ranges from a gelatin silver print donated by award-winning New York photographer Tim Atkinson, to a wall relief by Atlanta sculptor Martin Dawe, to an oil painting on canvas by artist Michael Tilson. Other artists who have contributed pieces of work for the silent auction include Gail Foster, Tom Swanston, Tony Hernandez, Cynthia Knapp, Vadim Bora, Paige Harvey, Louis Schneiderman, Laura Bowman, Fernando Ochoa, Craig Bromley, Evelyn Hammond, Chuck Bowdish, Tom Meyer, Kimo Minton, Kate Sanel, Felice Sharp, Barbara Schreiber and more than 35 others.

businesses have contributed raffle and silent auction items. The benefit is by invitation only and will draw more than 350 people, including top Internet executives, business people, artists and friends.
