Yellow Corporation (NASDAQ: YELL), the leading Fortune 500 freight transportation services company, announced today an alliance with venture capital firms, TL Ventures and EnerTech Capital Partners to form Transportation.com, an online transportation marketplace for shippers, carriers and private fleet operators. James D. Ritchie, former Ryder Integrated Logistics vice president will lead Transportation.com as president and chief executive officer. The new Internet venture anticipates a second quarter launch.
"Transportation.com plans to secure its leadership position in providing business-to-business transportation services over the Internet. With user-friendly, information-rich products and services, Transportation.com will take the complexity out of daily transactions, and provide shippers and carriers cost-effective transportation solutions," said Transportation.com president and chief executive officer, Jim Ritchie. "Transportation.com is uniquely positioned to offer our customers a competitive advantage by delivering powerful online products, services and information tools that will give them greater control of their businesses."
William D. Zollars, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Yellow Corporation explains, "Transportation.com will bring unparalleled transportation management solutions to the highly fragmented $441 billion transportation industry. Shippers, carriers and private fleet operators stand to benefit on several levels as Transportation.com can leverage Yellow Corporation's industry position, purchasing clout and technical expertise on their behalf."
Commenting on the new venture, Robert E. Keith, managing director of TL Ventures said, "TL Ventures invests in companies led by outstanding management teams capable of building category-defining businesses within the Internet. We recognize and understand the considerable confusion and noise in this hotly competitive arena. We're especially excited about Transportation.com, because they will leverage Yellow's technology infrastructure and industry position to quickly cut through the noise, and provide the credibility necessary to generate customer confidence and deliver meaningful service value." Keith concluded, "We have joined forces with Transportation.com because they have proven, practical transportation industry experience and strength, creative vision, ability to recognize opportunities in the marketplace and a strong technical team."
As president and chief executive officer of Transportation.com, Jim Ritchie brings an invaluable range of experience to the company. In his previous position as vice president, Global Vertical Industries for Ryder Integrated Logistics in Yorba Linda, Calif., Ritchie's responsibilities included a range of business and strategic development functions for six of Ryder's eight vertical industries. His tenure at Ryder provided him two decades of experience in numerous sales, operations and executive management positions.
"Through its affiliation with Yellow Corporation, Transportation.com already possesses a significant understanding of its potential customers. This new Internet venture, with its ability to capture real time data, will heighten this understanding and enable us to develop lasting, profitable one-to-one relationships with our customers." said Ritchie. "We're excited that Jim Ritchie will serve as president and CEO of Transportation.com," said William D. Zollars. "Not only does Jim embody leadership and executive skills needed to build a strong enterprise in a rapidly changing industry, but his logistics background, e-commerce experience and enthusiasm for the opportunities ahead are exactly the right mix of attributes to build Transportation.com into a successful and profitable Internet performer."
