I've spent 16 years in the freight forwarding and logistics business, following in the footsteps of my father and my grandfather. So I understand very well why many call this industry an old boys' club.

The good news is that a new generation of managers and a host of innovative technologies are ushering in an era of changing views. In particular, technology promises to drive faster and more efficient processes, helping to lower prices and increase service levels.

Despite the changes – and all the good news -- finding an ideal IT platform isn't easy. Many managers are overwhelmed by all the IT choices. How do you know whether your partners will be able to adapt to what you pick? Will upgrades be easy? Will employees adapt?

Doing nothing, of course, isn't the answer. The shipping industry, as anyone working within it knows, is rife with manual processes that have created vast operational inefficiencies.
