Globalstar Opens New Gateway Expanding Coverage Into Oil Rich Nigeria And Western Africa

Service Provider Globaltouch West Africa to Launch SPOT Satellite GPS Messenger and Simplex Asset-Tracking Services

Milpitas, CA (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) - Globalstar, Inc. (Nasdaq:GSAT), a leading provider of mobile satellite voice and data services to businesses, governments and consumers, today announced it has installed a simplex data applique at its new gateway ground station in Nigeria. The applique installation completes construction of the gateway which will provide Globalstar satellite coverage to Nigeria, the surrounding portions of Western and Central Africa, as well as parts of the coastal Atlantic and Gulf of Guinea maritime region. Globalstar independent service provider Globaltouch (West Africa) Limited (GWAL) based in Lagos, Nigeria will operate the gateway located in Kaduna. Globalstar owns a 30 percent equity stake in the new service provider operation.

Beginning this week, GWAL expects to initially offer Globalstar Simplex data solutions for a variety of logistics, supply chain management, government asset tracking applications plus SPOT Satellite GPS Messenger™ tracking and messaging products and services for both enterprise and consumer applications. GWAL plans to offer Globalstar's entire suite of current and next-generation advanced satellite voice and duplex-data solutions following the launch of the Globalstar second-generation constellation which is expected to begin next year. With the new gateway Globalstar and GWAL provide expanded continuous satellite coverage from Europe southward to most of Angola, west to the Atlantic coast maritime region and east to Sudan.

The Simplex data applique installed at the new Nigeria gateway is used to provide Globalstar Simplex data services. Customers can also use Simplex data satellite modems and integrated back office management solutions to track mobile assets -- such as vehicles, trailers, cargo containers and maritime vessels, using GPS or other location-based software.
